transit reversal

this is a post from Spacing Wire blog, talks about the reversal of transit in Toronto, how great transit infrastructure in Toronto was reversed during the second half of the 20th century with the advent of the automobile.

Where Dupont meets Dundas meets Annette

Whats really interesting in the above article is the bridge that linked the two Old Weston Roads that we have today, to think that there used to be a bridge that went over the tracks from Dupont/Dundas/Annette intersection and linked with Old Weston Road at Davenport is surreal... all that traffic that we have today through the Keele and Dundas jog would be much more relieved if this bridge still existed. I just cant think of a reason why they would dismantle it.

Another sad loss is the old Junction railway station, imagine the commute time to Union if this still existed and the idea of reopening this station should be explored even though there exists another GO station down at Bloor and Dundas, but this site at Dupont/Dundas/Annette is more geographically suited for bus loops, drop-off stations and parking, where as the current station at Bloor and Dundas does not have that advantage, another reversal of transit in Toronto.

I agree totally that this intersection, once the "Junction" should be a major transit hub, I'm a car owner in the area east & south (on Symington) of this intersection and always hated that disconnect & decision (Keele/Dundas/Old Weston/StClair) and wishfully dreamt of restoring that bridge (which I doubt the city would even entertain convo).
But transit planners should seriously consider extending the eventual DRL (running along Queen, north east of Roncesvalles) planned to terminate at Dundas W station, to extend north and west with stops at that Junction intersection, Keele (serve that new / future condo dev.) and to Jane then north again to where Transit City planned a line to past Steeles (Woodbridge or somewhere), makes a lot of sense. I think if Metrolinx was really thinking & planning properly they would electrify that ARL instead of diesel which would allow it to make more stops running along the same route, it could then serve this whole area with stops in Keele/Dundas, Dupont/Annette/Dundas St (Junction), Dundas W/Bloor (Subway), Roncevalles/Souraen, Queen/Dufferin, Liberty Village and then Union, now talk about public usage and increased ridership making good use of existing infrastructure while still having the ARL & DRL, they could turn it into their planned express service after it leaves Keele with one stop in Weston then the airport. Maybe I'm dreaming... thx for blog post
